What is Cyproterone/ethinyl?
Cyproterone/ethinyl is an oral medication used to treat severe acne with seborrhoea (oily skin) and symptoms of androgenization (the masculizing effect of androgens, especially testosterone). Cyproterone/ethinyl is effective at preventing pregnancy, but it is not prescribed solely for this purpose due to the risk of serious side effects. Instead, Cyproterone/ethinyl is only prescribed for acne when other treatments have proven ineffective.
How does Cyproterone/ethinyl work?
Cyproterone/Ethinyl works to decrease hair growth as well as the oil in the skin which can cause acne. Higher testosterone levels in females can worsen acne and cause extra hair growth. Cyproterone has anti-testosterone effects, while ethinyl estradiol balances these effects in order to prevent changes to the menstrual cycle.
