What is Valacyclovir?
A Valacyclovir prescription is used in the treatment of a group of viruses commonly known as herpes viruses. This includes cold sores and genital herpes (herpes simplex 1 and 2) and shingles (herpes zoster). Valacyclovir is an antiviral medication that cannot cure HSV but can help alleviate symptoms, treat active flare-ups, and prevent breakouts.
How does Valacyclovir work?
A valacyclovir prescription works by making it more difficult for the virus to reproduce in your body. Disrupting how the virus can replicate and spread in the body can treat both the symptoms and the outbreak. Valacyclovir cannot cure herpes viruses, but it can lower the chances of the virus spreading to other people.
In Canada, valacyclovir is available by prescription only.
