What is Amerge?
Amerge is an oral medication that treats the symptoms of migraines. Amerge belongs to a class of drugs called serotonin 5 HT receptor agonists. While Amerge does not prevent migraines, it can help alleviate the symptoms when taken at the first sign of a migraine. Amerge comes in both 1 mg and 2.5 mg tablets, with a maximum daily dose of 5 mg in a 24 hour period.
How does Amerge work?
Amerge works by using 5-HT1D/1B to constrict the blood vessels in the brainstem. It also reduces inflammatory substances in the body that can cause migraine symptoms. Amerge is most effective when taken immediately after symptoms begin. It can cause dizziness, weakness, and drowsiness, so you should not handle heavy machinery after taking Amerge.
