Diabetes is more common than you think

Every 3 minutes one person in Canada is diagnosed with diabetes, yet it remains difficult to access quality, ongoing care.
4 million Canadians are currently living with diagnosed diabetes or pre-diabetes.
One-third of those thought to be living with diabetes or pre-diabetes are undiagnosed.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for approximately 90% of diabetes cases in Canada.

What exactly is diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic condition that impacts your body’s ability to properly regulate blood sugar due to problems with insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes, the most common diabetes diagnosis, happens when the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, or can’t properly use the insulin it makes. Prediabetes happens when your blood sugar is above normal but hasn’t reached the threshold for a type 2 diagnosis. Prediabetes is a sign to take action, as it can still cause health concerns and increase your risk of developing diabetes in the future.

What really causes diabetes?

It’s a common misconception that diabetes is a self-inflicted condition, or happens as a result of lifestyle habits alone. There’s no one singular cause of diabetes or prediabetes, and things like genetics, family history, environment, and lifestyle factors can all play a role in its development. At Felix, our healthcare practitioners use risk assessments and comprehensive metabolic health testing to deliver a thorough diagnosis.

What are the symptoms of diabetes?

There are a range of symptoms commonly associated with diabetes and prediabetes, though some people can develop this condition with no obvious warning signs at all. If you think you might be at risk, it’s important to seek medical guidance to assess your metabolic health and explore a diagnosis.

Common signs and symptoms:
  • Unusual thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Sudden changes in weight
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Blurred vision
  • Frequent infections
  • Slow-healing cuts & bruises
  • Numbness in hands or feet
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)

Understanding diabetes treatment options

Effectively managing diabetes or prediabetes often involves a combination of treatment and lifestyle modification, but consulting a healthcare practitioner is always the best first step. They can work with you to understand your diagnosis and develop a treatment plan that best suits your specific needs, symptoms, and lifestyle.

Common treatment options:
  • Healthy eating habits
  • Regular physical activity
  • Blood sugar monitoring
  • Weight maintenance
  • Medical treatment
  • Vitamins and supplements
  • Stress management
Though we believe access to virtual care can help support those with prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, and high cholesterol, we recognize that certain metabolic conditions require in-person care. Our program isn’t suitable for patients with type 1 diabetes, severe kidney disease, retinopathy, increased cardiovascular disease risk, or those who are currently pregnant or on insulin.

Diabetes doesn’t have to be scary

No stigma, no judgment — our healthcare practitioners can provide thoughtful, informed care so you can stay on track and navigate diabetes without the stress.

Frequently asked questions about diabetes care

Diabetes Testing

How can I get diabetes care online in Canada?

A great  and seamless way to access diabetes care online in Canada is to start your assessment process with Felix today!

It only takes a few minutes to fill out your questionnaire, and one of our licensed healthcare practitioners will usually get back to you within 24 hours with a response. From there, they can evaluate your needs for prediabetes or diabetes management.

Once they’ve taken a look at your current needs, as well as evaluated your health and medical history, they can suggest diabetes or prediabetes treatment plans.

Plus, our pharmacy partners can get your treatment resources delivered directly (and discreetly) to your home, at no additional cost to you!

Who is eligible for Felix's Diabetes Care program?

Patients must either reside in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, or British Columbia and in some cases, be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada. Patients are required to be in Canada while receiving care.

How does online diabetes care work?

When you choose to go through Felix for your online diabetes care, there are a few different ways that your assigned health practitioner may help you identify the best treatment plan for you.

In addition to completing your assessment with Felix to provide all the necessary medical information to your practitioner, this could also involve:

  • Have labwork (blood tests) done to check blood sugar levels
  • Discussing your diagnosis with your practitioner, as well as talking about different type 2 diabetes or prediabetes treatment plans including lifestyle modifications that may benefit you
  • Having follow-ups with your practitioner, so that they can provide you with ongoing support and guidance

SIDE NOTE: We want to note here that Felix does not offer care for type 1 diabetes. We currently offer care for prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes.

Is Diabetes treatment covered by insurance?

If you’re curious about whether your private insurance company offers coverage to get diabetes care online in Canada, you should reach out to your insurance representative directly to discuss whether your current benefits include treatment resources for type 2 diabetes.

The good news is that if you do have coverage, Felix can bill your insurer directly to save you the time and trouble of having to process the submission yourself.

In regards to provincial coverage, this will vary from province to province across Canada. While one province may offer coverage to get online diabetes care, many others may not provide any.

All of the coverage available through provincial health plans is also subject to strict eligibility criteria, so you’ll need to check your specific province’s coverage guidelines to see whether coverage is available and what eligibility requirements need to be met.

Do doctors offer treatment plans for prediabetes?

It’s important before we discuss treatment plans for prediabetes that taking a proactive approach to metabolic health is the main goal.

Once it’s been identified that you’re prediabetic or diabetic, your healthcare practitioner can  create a personalized plan for you, which may involve treatment resources, including lifestyle changes that can benefit your health.

The most recommended lifestyle changes in these scenarios include things like:

  • Losing weight
  • Improving your diet
  • Increasing the amount of exercise you get regularly
  • Getting full, restful nights’ sleeps
  • Managing your stress levels
  • Quitting smoking

What are signs that your blood sugar is too high?

Before we dive into the signs that your blood sugar may be too high (also called hyperglycemia), it’s important to remember that with type 2 diabetes, high blood sugar may be the result of food, exercise, and medication levels not being well-balanced.

Improving your diet to eat more well-balanced meals with lots of vitamins, minerals, and healthy proteins, exercising more frequently or for longer periods of time, and having a practitioner overseeing your prediabetes or type 2 diabetes treatment plan can help maintain stable, safe blood sugar levels.

In regards to signs that your blood sugar is too high, these may appear both as mild or severe symptoms, depending on how high your blood sugars are, and how your body reacts individually to this. These signs of high blood sugar could include:

  • Increased thirst
  • More frequent urination
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Blurred vision
  • Lightheadedness
  • Dry, hot, or flushed skin
  • Restlessness
  • Drowsiness
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Weak pulse
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting

Should any of these signs of high blood pressure appear, you should let your practitioner know, so that they can suggest appropriate measures to better manage your blood sugar levels.

What are signs that your blood sugar is too low?

Like hyperglycemia, let’s discuss some of the causes of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), before we dive into the signs of hypoglycemia.

Low blood sugars can be caused by:

  • Performing more exercise than usual
  • Not eating enough
  • Waiting too long between meals
  • Taking too much of certain medications
  • Drinking alcohol

These causes of low blood sugar may then lead to signs that are recognizable, which you can use as a sign that your blood sugar is below normal levels, such as:

  • Shaky or lightheaded
  • Confusion
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Numbness or tingling on your tongue or lips
  • Sweating
  • Headaches
  • Increased hunger
  • Feeling anxious or irritable
  • Nervousness
  • Nausea
  • Disorientation
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Seizures

If you start to experience any of the signs of low blood sugar, you should contact your practitioner right away, so they can suggest methods to improve your blood sugar management.

How long does it take for prediabetes to turn into diabetes?

It’s good to remember when discussing prediabetes in Canada that over 6 million Canadians are currently dealing with prediabetes management.

With that in mind, the primary goal with prediabetes treatment or management is to prevent it from becoming type 2 diabetes. This is done by taking steps to manage blood sugar levels, as well as lifestyle changes that can reduce the likelihood of type 2 diabetes occurring.

Although these steps can help slow or even halt the progression of type 2 diabetes in some patients, approximately 25% of people with prediabetes develop into type 2 diabetes within 5 years.

The length of time it takes prediabetes to develop into type 2 diabetes will vary from person to person, depending on a large number of factors (i.e., genetics, age, weight, diet, etc.), which is why it’s important to speak to an online diabetes informed practitioner as soon as you start to show signs of the condition presenting.

Does Felix offer support for different types of diabetes, like MODY or LADA?

Latent Autoimmune Diabetes (LADA) and Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) are two of these types of diabetes that require specialized care and support.

Felix does not provide LADA or MODY diabetes care through our online services. We focus on prediabetes, type 2 diabetes.

If you require diabetes care for LADA or MODY, you may need to contact an endocrinologist, who can provide more specialized information and guidance relating to these two conditions.

What’s included in Felix’s diabetes care services?

Felix can help you with prediabetes management and treatment plans for type 2 diabetes to support your health.

Our team will be happy to help guide you through lifestyle adjustments that will help you build better daily habits.

We can arrange for routine lab testing to be performed, as well. This makes it easy for you to stay on top of monitoring your condition, and to take action right away, if changes do start to occur.

Does Felix offer support for managing diabetes symptoms?

In addition to creating a personalized type 2 diabetes treatment plan for you, and providing guidance on lifestyle changes that you can make, there are a few other ways that Felix can support you.

Our team of diabetes-informed practitioners are always here to provide you with any information that you may need, so that you stay well informed about your health and well-being.

We’ll also help arrange for regular lab testing for you, so we can keep an eye on your A1C levels to ensure they remain stable and at safe levels.

Can I get treatment for gestational or neonatal diabetes through Felix?

Gestational diabetes and neonatal diabetes are two other diabetes that require specialized care.

Felix doesn’t offer gestational or neonatal diabetes treatments through our online healthcare platform. Felix only offers care for type 2 diabetes, and prediabetes, at this time.

If you believe that you require care for neonatal or gestational diabetes, you should consider contacting an endocrinologist, a diabetes specialist who can provide you with the necessary support and guidance to safely control these two types of diabetes.

Online Visits

How does the visit work?

After creating an account, you will complete a medical assessment for evaluation by one of the Felix healthcare practitioners.

During your assessment, you will have the opportunity to send your practitioner questions via secure messaging.

In most cases, practitioners will complete your assessment with secure messaging alone but sometimes they may determine you require an audio or video visit and/or further diagnostic testing to help determine the best treatment plan for you.

If your practitioner has determined a prescription treatment is appropriate, they will approve your visit and write you a prescription. Our pharmacy will then ship your prescription to your home.

You’ll be able to message your healthcare practitioner if you have questions or want to make changes to your treatment at any time.

Do I need to complete my online visit at a scheduled time?

No. We use an asynchronous telemedicine model so you can complete your online visit in your own time and we save your progress so you can come back later to finish it.

If you are completing a visit in the mental health or weight loss categories, your healthcare practitioner may require a phone or video call to discuss your medical profile further during the assessment process.

Does the online visit require a phone or video appointment?

Most assessments do not require a phone or video conversation. Once a prescriber has reviewed the info in your assessment they will respond to you via secure instant messages that you can access within your Felix account.

If you are completing a visit in the mental health or weight loss categories, your healthcare practitioner may require a phone or video call to discuss your medical profile further during the assessment process.

How quickly will a healthcare practitioner review my online visit?

You can expect to receive a response from a healthcare practitioner within 24 hours of submission. If you’ve been waiting longer than this, please email hello@felixforyou.ca and we’ll look into it.

Can I just get the treatment and skip the online visit?

No. A visit with a licensed healthcare practitioner is required for all treatments currently provided through Felix’s service.

Shipping

How long will it take to get my treatment?

Not long. After completing your assessment, a practitioner will generally respond within 24 hours, and often much sooner.

Treatment plans will be processed within 2-3 business days of your approval date if there is nothing blocking fulfillment.

All packages are shipped via Express Post, which usually takes 2-3 business days. You will receive an email with your tracking number once your treatment has been shipped.

Will my shipment be affected by the Canada Post strike?

Because we work with multiple delivery partners, your shipments won’t be affected by the Canada Post Strike. We are working to ensure that your medication will be processed and shipped according to schedule. Learn more about how to navigate the service disruption here.

Is your packaging discreet?

Absolutely. All Felix shipments arrive in a nondescript blister package so you can have your treatment shipped wherever makes sense for you as long as there is someone there to sign for it.

Do I have to be home to receive my package?

A signature upon delivery may be required.

How much does it cost to ship my treatment?

There is currently no cost to have your treatment shipped to you from our Felix Pharmacy network.

Insurance

Am I covered by my insurance?

Treatment coverage varies greatly between different insurance plans.

The good news is that if you are covered, Felix can bill your insurer directly, and then process your treatment plan at no additional cost to you. We recommend that you upload your private and/or provincial benefit card during the online visit so that our pharmacy partner can apply any coverage you are eligible for before processing your treatment plan.

Insurance coverage for treatment plans through Felix doesn't include the cost of your visit.

Is the online visit covered by my insurance or provincial health plans?

A Felix online visit is considered asynchronous since it is conveniently completed through a secure chat bases system. Currently, asynchronous visits are not covered by insurance or provincial health plans so you will be charged a visit fee, depending on the category of treatment you are requesting.

Is the medication covered by my insurance or provincial health plans?

Medication coverage varies greatly between different plans, provinces, and has specific criteria that determine eligibility. For private insurance, we recommend contacting your benefits administrator with your details and the Drug Identification Number (DIN) and the drug name to determine your coverage.

For more details on provincial health plan coverage see below:

Alberta: Learn more about AHCIP here. Search for covered drugs here.

British Columbia: Learn more about MSP here. Search for covered drugs here.

Is birth control covered by OHIP in Ontario?

OHIP+ covers some birth control for eligible residents of Ontario who are under 25 years old and do not have private insurance. You can check if your birth control medication is covered here. Make sure to upload your Ontario health card during your online visit so our pharmacy partners can apply your coverage directly.

Felix 101

What is Felix?

Felix is Canada’s first truly integrated healthcare platform. We provide on-demand treatment for everyday health needs like weight loss, mental health, sexual health, and more. Founded in 2019, our digital-first approach to healthcare includes everything from diagnosis to prescription — all accessible from the comfort of home.

Does Felix replace my doctor?

No. Felix provides a faster, hassle-free way for you to get a treatment plan for certain conditions, but our service does not replace your primary care provider. For matters that extend beyond obtaining a lifestyle treatment safely and easily, we encourage you to consult your primary health practitioner in person — whether for checkups, personal health concerns, or to inform them about your current treatments or treatment plans.

Can I be accurately assessed remotely?

Absolutely. Our online assessments have been designed to ask all the necessary questions required for diagnosis. We've worked with specialists to create an assessment process that can provide sufficient information for the healthcare practitioner to determine whether or not you are eligible for a prescription and craft an appropriate treatment plan.

It's an emergency. What do I do?

Call 911 or proceed to your nearest emergency room immediately. Felix is not intended for medical emergencies. Once the emergency has been addressed or resolved, contact your prescribing practitioner to inform them of your experience as this may impact your current treatment plan.

Who can use Felix?

Anyone who is 18 years or older older (16 or older for acne and birth control prescriptions), and is located in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Saskatchewan or Ontario. We cannot ship treatments outside of these provinces at this time.

Our Healthcare Practitioners

How do I communicate with my Felix practitioner?

Your Felix practitioner will message you via secure instant message. You’ll receive an email when you have a new message and can respond to these from within your Felix account.

Can I see the same Felix practitioner after my initial assessment?

You will have the ability to chat with your designated Felix practitioner for the entirety of your prescription length. When your prescription is nearing completion, we will email you to submit a checkup visit so one of our prescribers can renew your prescription.

Our matching system is based on availability, so we can’t guarantee you’ll be paired with the same healthcare practitioner at your renewal visit.

Who are the practitioners that will be reviewing my online visit?

They are all licensed, real Canadian healthcare practitioners! All online visits submitted via Felix are reviewed by them and they must be licensed in your province to prescribe you the medication. It is these healthcare practitioners, and not Felix, who determine whether or not to write you a prescription, as well as the appropriate dosage (where applicable).

What does your medical team do?

Our medical team and board members help oversee each of our treatments to ensure our medical assessments are thorough, safe, personalized, and provide best-in-class care. Our pharmacists provide treatment support through medication counselling and education.
