What is Tenofovir?
Tenofovir is an antiretroviral agent what works in combination with other antiretroviral agents (i.e., non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors or protease inhibitors), as a treatment for HIV-1 infections in adults.
How does Tenofovir work?
Tenofovir is a fixed-dose combination of the antiviral drugs, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate.
It works by helping to block HIV reverse transcriptase, a chemical in your body (enzyme) that is needed for HIV to multiply. It lowers the amount of HIV in the blood (viral load), and through this, it lowers the amount of HIV in the blood and reduces the chance of infections that happen, when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).
