What is Imitrex?
Imitrex is a migraine headache medication that comes in the form of an oral tablet, a nasal spray, and an injection. Imitrex is a selective serotonin receptor agonist that targets substances in the brain to treat the symptoms of a migraine. Symptoms should decrease within 30 minutes of taking the oral tablet, within 15 minutes of using the nasal spray, and in 10 to 15 minutes for the injection.
How does Imitrex work?
Also known by its generic name, sumatriptan, Imitrex works by constricting swollen blood vessels around the brain and reducing substances that can trigger the symptoms of a migraine. As a selective serotonin receptor agonist, Imitrex stimulates the naturally occurring neurotransmitter serotonin, which helps to narrow blood vessels and reduce inflammation in the brain.
