How does Doxycycline work?
Doxycycline is an antibiotic that stops the bacteria’s ability to make what it needs to grow new cells.This helps get rid of the infection it has been prescribed to treat.
Doxycycline MR has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce the bumps and pimples caused by rosacea.
What is Doxycycline used to treat?
Doxycycline MR is used to treat the papules and pustules (also called inflammatory lesions), caused by rosacea in adults.
Doxycycline MR is the one of two major forms of doxycycline-based medications. The other common form is primarily used as a treatment for certain types of bacterial infections.
How do you take Doxycycline?
Doxycycline MR prescriptions should be taken in the morning, once daily, on an empty stomach. This means either one hour before or two hours after a meal.
It’s recommended to take a drink of water with the medication, to avoid the risks of esophageal ulceration or irritation.
Doxycycline should always be taken as directed by your healthcare practitioner.

What are the common side effects of Doxycycline?
The most common side effects from taking Doxycycline MR include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Upper abdominal pain
- Upset stomach
- Headache
- Soreness of the nose or throat
- Sinus infection
- Increase in blood pressure
- Fungal infections

Who shouldn't take Doxycycline?
There are a few people who should avoid taking Doxycycline, such as:
- Patients with gastrectomy, gastric bypass surgery, any surgeries that bypass/exclude the duodenum, or who are achlorhydric
- People who are hypersensitive to doxycycline or tetracycline medications
- People with myasthenia gravis
- People with ocular rosacea
- People who are breastfeeding or planning on breastfeeding
- People who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- People under the age of 8
Doxycycline MR 40mg should not be used to treat infections.
