What is Descovy?
Decovy is an antiretroviral agent that's used in tandem with other antiretrovirals for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection in adults and children weighing more than 25kgs.
It's also used as part of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1, excluding those at risk of exposure from vaginal sex.
How does Descovy work?
As a treatment, Descovy lowers the amount of HIV in the blood (viral load). HIV infection destroys CD4+ (T) cells. These cells are important to help the immune system fight infections. After a large number of T cells are destroyed, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) develops.
As part of PrEP treatments, Descovy works to reduce the risk of getting HIV-1 when it's in your bloodstream before you're exposed to HIV-1. It's important to continue to practice safe sex. Use condoms to lower the chance of sexual contact with body fluids such as semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Do not re-use or share needles.
