What is Almotriptan?
Almotriptan is a prescription medication which is used to treat the symptoms of migraine headaches. It is an oral tablet taken on an as needed basis when the symptoms of a migraine headache first appear, and is not effective as a preventative measure against future migraines. Almotriptan is only prescribed for treating migraine symptoms and should not be taken for common tension headaches.
How does Almotriptan work?
As a selective serotonin receptor agonist, Almotriptan works by narrowing the blood vessels around the brain and stopping pain signals from being sent. Almotriptan reduces pain and blocks the body from releasing certain natural substances that can cause the symptoms of a migraine. Almotriptan should be taken at the first sign of a migraine.
