Saxenda Insurance Coverage

Key Takeaways

Are you considering Saxenda but still trying to figure out your insurance coverage?

‍Understanding how to access insurance coverage for Saxenda is important. These medications can be expensive; especially when you’re taking them regularly over months or years. Knowing your options is the best way to ensure you utilize any supports available to you, and minimize these costs whenever possible.

Let’s explore the types of insurance coverage and financial support that may be available to you.

NOTE: The information listed below is based on broad guidelines concerning coverage. For more specific information, contact your insurance provider. They’ll be able to give you any information you need regarding your individual coverage options.

It’s also important to mention before we get started that Felix is currently only offering Saxenda to residents of Ontario, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia.

How Much is Saxenda Without Insurance

The Saxenda cost will vary slightly, depending on your coverage eligibility, and which province you live in, but currently Saxenda costs approximately $550 per box of 5 injectors.

Depending on your dosing progression, each box could last approximately 4 to 5 weeks. In total, this means the average person could use between 10-11 boxes of Saxenda per year (costing $5,500-$6,050).

Knowing Your Saxenda Insurance Options

Currently, the two options available for Saxenda insurance coverage are private insurance providers, or the Novo Nordisk’s SaxendaCare program.

Both options can reduce out of pocket costs of prescription medications and can help patients with pharmaceutical costs. Let’s explore these two in more detail:

Private Insurance Providers

The first place you should start looking for information is your employer’s benefits handbook, or the guidelines package that was assigned to you when you signed up for private insurance individually.

Coverage options can vary. Some may offer partial prescription drug coverage, requiring additional out-of-pocket costs, while others may have a maximum amount the company will cover annually. Some insurers may provide no coverage at all for Saxenda.

If you can’t find anything relevant there, it’s a good idea to gather some valuable information, before reaching out to your insurer. It’ll save you time and frustration trying to get answers quickly via phone or email.

This includes information such as:

  • Your insurance policy number
  • Your personal certificate or identification number
  • The medication name you’re looking for (i.e., Saxenda)
  • The medication’s Drug Identification Number

Once you contact your insurance provider with this information, they should be able to tell you quickly whether you have insurance coverage for Saxenda, and if so, how much.

In some cases, people will also need to meet specific medical criteria or provide documentation from their healthcare practitioner to be eligible for coverage. If you need insurance paperwork from your Felix healthcare practitioner, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@felixforyou.ca—we'll gladly help.

Novo Nordisk’s Saxenda Care Program

The Novo Nordisk Saxenda Care program offers assistance for patients that are making their first purchase of Saxenda. This is up to a maximum of 50% coverage assistance ($225) when the first prescription is filled.

To begin, you’ll just need to complete a short form, and agree to the program's terms and conditions. Once that’s done, they’ll send you a one-time discount code that you can upload into your insurance file with Felix. Please reach out to hello@felixforyou.ca if you need any help uploading your discount code.

They also offer Reimbursement Navigation appointments, where a specialist can help you navigate your insurance coverage details, as well as weight management support, and guidance on how to safely and effectively use Saxenda injectors.

Accessing Saxenda Medication Online in Canada
